Your portraits are always so expressive.
Thanks Luddy. Pictures don’t always have the context and I try not to explain it like a newspaper article. But this happened a short time after Sandy. The place where I live in Brooklyn was just abnormally quiet. She was one of those people handing out Jesus literature at the subway. She seemed to be in her own world (which is obviously not unique) like a track in the subway.
Candid I assume? Did he/she say anything to you?
She didn’t say anything to me but she did hand me a pamphlet on Jesus. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your weekend. I’m looking forward to the snow. I’m originally from Hawaii so anytime I see snow I love it . . . but I like being inside watching the snow. Peace. E
Jesus pamphlet, that’s great! She has a certain intensity about her so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised ;). Enjoy your weekend too. Not much awesome street shooting going on where you are this weekend I assume so enjoy watching snowflakes from the window! As for me, street shoot tomorrow if all goes well :D
Most shooters do portraits like they were doing photos of objects they come across. Many are real good too. Your best portraits are like recognition by you and your subject of the importance of each others existence.
It may have lasted for a mere second or two but the aftermath, the photo that remains, is a two way image where the viewer feels both you and your subject’s presence.
There is no Lightroom, no Fuji X100, no shutter speed, no aperture….there is only the shared here and now.
This is exactly what Minor White was all about.
As far as breathing….don’t give it a second thought….you do that naturally and very well at that…
Thanks Don for the comment. I know what you mean by objectification. Collecting and collecting and collecting like voyeurs. But sometimes there is a connection. And often times though the connection is just a lie, a momentary lapse of interactions and eye contacts. We just keep doing it, I don’t know but yet we do know . . .we just have to keep shooting and being there and hopefully getting it but for whom I don’t know. Just for us. Thanks for introducing me to Minor White. I am looking through his stuff now. Peace my man. E
