I keep cheddar cheese
Goldfish in my bag
Every so often when I’m feeling
Listless I put my hand in
My bag and touch the goldfish
I know each one by their
Curves and whether they
Have been partially eaten
Sometimes when things get
Really tough at work I bring
The bag into meetings
My colleagues think I’m
Looking for a pen or a paper
When I reach into the bag
But I’m really singing
Quiet songs like twinkle twinkle
Because that’s what they
Like the most.
I study advanced calculus on the train
Eventhough I took it during
My senior year in high school
No matter because you can
Never get enough review
That’s what my mother used to say
When she forced me to study
Math and science and numbers
When all my friends were playing
Now I get to go out without
A chaperone to the library
Or to school and sometimes to
Go shopping on flatbush avenue
He says that I’m too emotional
But that’s just because I say
I love him every chance I get
I know he goes out with his
Boys on Friday night
And comes back smelling like
Liquor and weed
At least though he’s not smelling
Like perfume
I don’t care that I have
To leave him alone over
The weekend
I want to give him his space
That’s the fair thing to
Do and I won’t even sweat him
For a few dollars every month
When this baby comes
This book has all the names
I found it in a tree
On seventy fourth street
And central park west
I was climbing and a racoon
Brought me in his flying frisbee
To the top of the El Dorado
And showed me how to
Read Jesus talk
Now I’m fluent and
I have all the names
Dare I say we make
Quite the lethal combination
