If you ask twenty street photographers what equipment they use, chances are you’ll get twenty different answers. For the most part, I don’t think there’s a “correct” answer, because in the end, composition still controls. Cameras, lenses, and film are merely a means to that end. That said, I think a good camera is one that is easy to access. as unscripted moments don’t wait.
In my mind, most SLRs are cumbersome. Every DSLR I’ve used feels like I’m bringing a rocket launcher to a picnic. Rangefinders, on the other hand, provide a whole different experience to capturing a scene. Just use a good one and you’ll see what I mean.
Wouter Brandsma warned, “Don’t let the tool become the main object of your photography though. Vision is not about what camera you use, but something within you and worth to find.”
Well said.

Wow! I really need a rangefinder…. I just don’t believe you or will ever sell my Canon 7D…
I love the way it handles in low light and how I can make everything into to move (even get still images)!
But I love something small and light!
Cool Photos!
Picked up an Olympus XA and liked your review. Used to live in Jersey so I took the PATH from time to time. Also have an Olympus Stylus (first one with the F3.5 lens not the F2.8 Stylus Epic), and a Yashica T4. The Yashica has the additional viewfinder on top, great for street photography. My Canon S2 is also pretty good for street shots, it has the flip out swivel LCD for waist level shooting. My father had a Voigtlander Vitessa back in the day. His Kodachromes shot with this camera are awe inspiring.
Just picked up a Yashica GSN. Looking forward to leaving the hefty MKII at home and shooting leaner.
rangefiinders is amazing hehe i buy M9 and i sell my canon 5d mark 2
100% agreed! I sold all my DSLR and lenses after I met my RF film cameras. :)
I bought a 1957 double-stroke Leica M3 and a 2011 Leica MP.
Other than the meter in the MP, there’s no electronics in these Leicas ;)
